Tree Stump, Schoen Lake

We lucked into one of the nicest sites in this park. Not far from the shore, and in addition to this grand old stump, there were a pair of giant douglas firs that had grown up together, forming a saddle between them about three and a half feet from the ground. Several other old, tall cedars as well. In their crowns flitted numerous white butterflies, who once in a while would float down to eye level long enough to give Nola hopes of catching one, or at least taking a picture, but they were only teasing. As soon as she had the camera out, off they went, back to the treetops.

A Stellar's Jay came by every evening, though not for handouts. He stayed in just inside the brush line. He was quite handsome, as they all are-- black head and neck, then a deep, jewel blue body.

I did this drawing just at dusk our first night there. I had to hurry to finish it before the light disappeared entirely.
