new again

A hearty welcome to January, and here's to never having another December like this last again!

Christmas, when I was finally allowed to lift my nose from the grindstone, was really quite nice. It included lots of chocolate, for one thing, and peppermints. The really good kind with soft centres. I'll have to pick up more. My great-grandmother used to keep a similar kind in a candy dish at home; she got them from a local grocer and I've searched in vain for them since. What else? a book, several calendars (a good thing, we need several every year), a pocketwatch, three DVDs, tea mugs, toys... nothing computer-related, for a change. I have a growing suspicion that we have all the computer stuff we need or want. That's gonna put a scare in the local economy.

Cardhu got lots of prezzies, a favourite being a stuffed frog. Froggie is nearly as popular as Raffi. Skooks is making do with a couple of catnip sachets, but that's all she wanted. Well, that she can have.

We spent New Year's Eve rusticating by the fire and reading. And nibbling the last of the shortbread Nola spent December making. She got very good at it. There's none left, so anyone wanting some will have to be really nice to her all the coming year. It's worth the effort.

RESOLUTIONS FOR 2006

I'm gonna keep it low-key this year, I think.

  1. Teach Cardhu to do something useful, like make coffee or bring in firewood.
  2. Evolve.
  3. Be nice as nice can be to Nola.

Speaking of that last, she's agitating for a dogwalk in a new park; I'd best get changed before she frowns on my sloth.

Happy New Year, from our little household to yours. May you wallow in the soft peppermint center all year.

Happy New Year! Is the stuffed frog the kind with a speaker that emits a recorded croak when you squeeze it? My dog Miles has one of those, and he adores it so much that it is always dirty and stinky. Last time I ran it through the washing machine, the croaker stopped working, and then two days later started croaking LOUDLY in the middle of the night (scaring the hell out of me, delighting Miles) and WOULD NOT SHUT UP UNTIL THE BATTERY RAN OUT.

Do not anger the stuffed frog.

Alas, the stuffed frog’s squeaker is a simpler thing, as is suitable for a respectable Canadian dog. Your fast-moving, high-living American pooches may be too jaded to go for toys without battery-powered FX, but up here in the chilly, rainy, maple-leaved backwater, our pups are quite satisfied to bite down on plushie tummies for their squeak fixes.

As a bonus, we get to sleep through the night. Well, until spring when the bears wake up.

(and Happy New Year to you, too, and Elise and Goliath!)

Happy New Year! I have high hopes for your second new year’s resolution. If Stephen Harper can evolve, I’m positive that you can too.

That’s ‘evolved’? I know I can do better than that. I’m already doing better than that. Yeesh.

Maybe we could start an evolution competition between you and Mr. Harper? You could think of it as saving Canada from a horrible, horrible fate.
